This phenomenon is so pronounced that the American Psychological Association (APA) recommends that therapists employ such measures in their offices to increase client comfort. According to the APA, hues like sage green and dusty blue can help to promote a sense of calm and relaxation. Whatever the science, one of the quickest ways to increase the cozy factor in a particular room is to tinker with the lighting. This could be as simple as reducing how many lights you have turned on, or it could be as complex as reimagining your lighting arrangement.

Walk through your home and think about the mood you want to create and the light that is required or is missing,' suggests Scarlett Hampton, co-founder of lights&lamps. If you are concerned about water damage, you may prefer to opt for a performance rug made from polypropylene or recycled plastic, designed to be water-resistant, hardwearing and easy to clean. This beadboard wainscot is capped with a flat rail that acts as a shelf for toiletries, keeping them within easy reach. The material also wraps the tub surround and is painted the same spring green for a cheery, built-in look. Back in the day, wood boards made cheap and durable walls for hard-working rooms.

Be sure to include ambient lighting like bedside table lamps or wall sconces to create a warm glow. Soft textures make seating areas feel cozier than anything else! Create a warm and inviting space where you can’t wait to snuggle up with plush throw blankets, fluffy pillows, faux fur, and cozy rugs. A cozy home is all about creating a warm and inviting atmosphere with soft lighting, comfy textures, and personal touches that make you feel right at home.

You can rearrange seating to face the fireplace and introduce a snug rug to bridge the space. Also, decorate the mantel with a combo of scented candles – think cinnamon or pumpkin spice – an ornate mirror, and warm mementos. It's actually quite easy to change the color scheme in a living room to make it cozier. All it could take to changing up a few cushions, throwing down a rug, you could even paint a wall (we love this olive green). This fall color scheme is particularly perfect for when the weather changes and you want a cheap seasonal switch-up.

Pssst… gray by nature is cool, so if you want your home to feel warm, use a warm paint color. When the weather begins to cool, opt for a rug with more material, like a braided or textured wool rug. If a giant area rug isn't in the budget, layer smaller rugs in select spots—as a soft landing next to the bed, beneath the coffee table, or in front of a reading chair, for example. Nothing makes a home feel more lived-in and personal than walls covered in a collection of art and photographs. Created by teachers and led by educators, PLTW motivates, prepares, and supports teachers as they strive to make every child in every grade STEM-successful. From the first day to the last day, we’re the STEM ally you and your teaching staff can count on. My advice to all from teaching this for 20 years is don't be afraid to stretch out and try new things with the curriculum in your classroom. Don't treat it as a straight line; treat it as a circle where you can come back around and revisit, redo, and improve.

They are then challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit to design a therapeutic toy for a child who has cerebral palsy. Using Python® as a primary tool, students develop computational-thinking skills and tackle challenges like designing apps to solve real-world problems for clients. Once the design is created and you have built your plan, you now need to implement the partnership. Someone must be tasked with organizing the logistics of the partnership, whether that be times and dates partners meet with students, transportation, or other things.

In ES, students investigate and design solutions in response to real-world challenges related to clean and abundant drinking water, food supply issues, and renewable energy. Applying their knowledge through hands-on activities and simulations, students research and design potential solutions to these true-to-life challenges. Students learn important aspects of building and site design and development. They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architecture design software. This unit will allow students to discover computer science concepts and skills by creating personally relevant, tangible, and shareable projects. Throughout the unit, students will learn about programming for the physical world by blending hardware design and software development.

This activity, which is a part of the Design and Modeling unit in PLTW Gateway, is empowering students to see how they can transfer what they learn in this class to their other courses. PLTW’s blog is intended to serve as a forum for ideas and perspectives from across our network. Students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects, including making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials. As a part of this process, we take standards connections into account when developing and updating our curriculum. This phase is key, as data can be collected and used for the next idea for another partnership. All of these pieces of information can be utilized during the next design phase for the next partner.

Partners can be developed from people within your school site, students and/or their families, smaller local businesses, and professional, faith, and civic organizations. You will need to do a “pitch,” where you sit down with the potential partner and show them your plan. The more details you can provide, the easier it will be for them to see themselves helping you. They need to see the plan, and you need to educate them about how they can become your partner. By engaging in the puzzle cube activity and focusing on the principles outlined in our STEAM philosophy, students see how the design process is used throughout the world and in a variety of ways. In addition, it’s fulfilling to know we have better prepared our students for college-level engineering and given them a real taste of the field they are about to enter.

Students study topics such as combinational and sequential logic and are exposed to circuit design tools used in industry, including logic gates, integrated circuits, and programmable logic devices. Through explorations of coding and robotics, flight and space, human body systems, and more, PLTW Gateway fuels students’ passion for discovery. As they engage in hands-on, collaborative problem solving focused on real-world challenges, students use and stretch their imaginations in brand-new ways and connect their learning to life. All the while, students step into roles spanning the career landscape – a crucial experience during this transitional time in their lives. Students investigate and design solutions in response to real-world challenges related to clean and abundant drinking water, food supply, and renewable energy.

Does FEMA Use Waffle House Closures to Determine How Bad a Disaster Is?

waffle house index

Fugate has stated publicly that the Waffle House Index has been used internally at FEMA to help the agency determine which areas need more disaster relief services. For people, the Waffle House Index is more than eggs and pancakes, it’s a slice of normalcy and a comforting sign of hope. "If you get there and the Waffle House is closed?" Fugate wrote in a blog post. "We wanted to get something to eat because the day would be packed and didn't know when we'd get to eat again," said Fugate, describing their search for breakfast one morning after the storm.

It is an indicator of how complex and long supply chains are — for food, for fuel, for power — and of what it takes to plan around infrastructure that can be fragile in unexpected ways. Out in the Atlantic Ocean, Hurricane Matthew was hurling winds of 115 miles an hour toward the coast of Florida. Hundreds of miles inland, in the headquarters of Waffle House Inc., Stark’s software predicted that 477 of the chain’s almost 1,900 restaurants might be affected by the onrushing storm. Just ahead of Hurricane Idalia slamming into Florida's Big Bend Wednesday near Keaton Beach, five Waffle House restaurants were closed, Waffle House Vice President of Public Relations Njeri Boss told USA TODAY.

That model of staging supplies and personnel in layers outside an emergency, in order to swoop in quickly once it abates, isn’t unique to Waffle House. It’s also followed by the military and by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which oversees the Strategic National Stockpile of emergency medications, vaccines and antidotes for natural disasters and biological attacks. Because Waffle House has a reputation for staying open through most serious weather events or reopening quickly, a closed restaurant is a sure sign that FEMA, The National Guard, and other responders need to get to the area as soon as possible. Over the last several days, Waffle House, the restaurant famous for breakfast and always being open, has become a hot topic on social media, KTLA’s sister station WMBB reports. The company's goal is to reopen its stores as quickly as possible after a storm passes.

"Waffle House became almost like a rough guidepost," Fugate told FOX Business. "If it was open and had a full menu, we probably weren't in the worst-hit areas yet." "By 9 a.m., cars were lining up to get into the parking lot. At 10 a.m., the power came back on, the ceramic waffle irons were plugged in and waffles were added to the menu."

One story that is particularly uplifting is the exchange between chains Publix (from Florida) and H-E-B (from Texas) in that they have provided mutual support—Publix helped raise money for the Red Cross after Harvey and H-E-B sent supplies to Florida after Irma. Barrio Logan was chosen as a location by owner Herb Hudson, who toured various areas in San Diego including North Park. A GoFundMe has been set up in support of the family of the 74-year-old security guard, Rosalind, who was shot while working at the Waffle House.

Over the years there have been several news articles to come out about a little something called the “Waffle House Index.” This index is pretty ingenious—it relies on the open or closed status of the well-known diner chain in disaster-affected areas. In 2022, because of the expected severity of Hurricane Ian, 35 Waffle Houses closed in Florida prior to the storm's arrival, an extremely rare event. Hurricane Ian eventually made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 155 miles per hour (249 km/h), peaking out over the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 5 hurricane. "The delays are behind us and we are moving full steam ahead to complete the new restaurant in San Diego, shooting for a late-summer, early-fall opening," Sam White, financial and business advisor for Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles told NBC 7.

Negotiations at Columbia University unstable, organizers say

"Waffle House gets open, while everyone else has to wait for the infrastructure to allow them to reopen." "[Starbucks] didn't turn off their Wi-Fi, so people were pulling up to the Starbucks to get access to the internet," Fugate said. The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster offer a list of nearly 60 organizations to choose from—depending on what kinds of missions you support. From veterans continuing their service with Team Rubicon, to trained comfort dogs of Hope Animal Assisted Crisis Response, and a variety of faith-based groups, there is an organization for everyone to love.

What can the 'Waffle House Index' tell you about storms?

waffle house index

The last shots fired call was in 2021, and shots were fired in 2020 as well. Campus police announced earlier that anyone who stayed in the area would be subject to criminal trespass laws. The Los Angeles Police Department arrested approximately 50 protestors at the University of Southern California after campus police gave a dispersal order to demonstrators, according to a CNN crew at the scene.

He used it as a way of knowing how serious damage may be in a region, based on how many Waffle House locations were still open and serving after a storm. With Waffle House's reputation for staying open during severe weather, even FEMA uses the 'Waffle House Index' to measure the severity of a storm. “We think about, What are the timelines in which people have to be provided medications? ” Greg Burel, the stockpile’s director, told me. “Our primary stock is laid down in undisclosed locations around the country that give us access to large swaths of the population and that are accessible” by more than one type of transportation. Waffle House uses one main distributor, Illinois-based US Foods, which has depots scattered across the Southeast, where most Waffle Houses are concentrated, and where many hurricanes that strike the U.S. make landfall. So supplies don’t need to travel far in advance of a storm and are close by once roads are clear.

As [FEMA Director W. Craig Fugate] often says, the Waffle House test doesn’t just tell us how quickly a business might rebound – it also tells us how the larger community is faring. The sooner restaurants, grocery and corner stores, or banks can re-open, the sooner local economies will start generating revenue again – signaling a stronger recovery for that community. The success of the private sector in preparing for and weathering disasters is essential to a community’s ability to recover in the long run. As Craig [Fugate] often says, the Waffle House test doesn’t just tell us how quickly a business might rebound – it also tells us how the larger community is faring. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Waffle House is famed for more than just its all-day breakfast.

Some hurricane watchers measure the storm with the Waffle House Index

Negotiations between protesters and Columbia University officials about clearing the encampment on its lawn that had been extended for 48 hours have been “unstable," said Esha Karam, managing director of Columbia Daily Spectator, citing student organizers. No protesters or officers have been reported injured, police said. The Los Angeles Police Department said 93 people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's demonstrations at the University of Southern California. More in Hurricanes

People have opened their homes and their hearts to their fellow Americans in ways that are nothing short of absolutely inspiring. And of course, this is merely a snapshot of just some of the outstanding work that’s being done to help hurricane survivors across the southern parts of the country. More work is still being done and the outpouring of support continues.

(great) Mother’s Day gifts

More natural disasters, including three additional hurricanes that directly hit Florida that year, forced Fugate and his team to travel the state. There was one indicator that came back time and time again that best represented where the worst storm damage was located after a major weather event. "The one thing that was true for almost any disaster was if there was anything open or got open first, it was a Waffle House," Fugate said.

The 'Waffle House Index' is an unofficial gauge for hurricane impact. Here's what it is

The overhead lights and walk-in freezer weren’t working, but the gas grill was. The cooks boiled water on the grill, then poured it through the coffee machine, over beans ground before the power went out. The district manager, Chris Barnes, handed employees copies of an emergency grill-only menu. The fare included ham-and-egg sandwiches for $3.15 and quarter-pound hamburgers for $2.70.

As a precaution, the business preemptively closed three store in Idalia's path (Live Oak, Madison, Lake City), Boss said. Matthew Ray Booth, who lives a few miles away, came in at 4 p.m. He said he had spent two days drinking soda and eating canned pork and beans. He ordered bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, hash browns “scattered, covered and smothered,” and a glass of iced tea. “We didn’t have no air, and no place to cook no food at the house,” said the 69-year-old.

Roscoe's House of Chicken ‘N Waffles moves forward with construction of Barrio Logan location

Anytime a hurricane heads to a location Waffle House serves, the company’s crisis response team springs into action, working with employees before the storm and helping them get back to work, if they can, after the disaster. The historic high-end Category 3 hurricane drove a "catastrophic" storm surge and birthed flooding for hundreds of miles before powering into the southern Georgia border around 11 a.m. Fugate remembered responding to a deadly tornado that had torn through Joplin, Missouri, in 2011.

According to several media reports the index ranges from green, to yellow, to red. Yellow means the restaurants are on a limited menu and lack resources. "They are open most of the time. And that was the index. If a Waffle House is closed because there's a disaster, it's bad. We call it red. If they're open but have a limited menu, that's yellow," he said. "If they're green, we're good, keep going. You haven't found the bad stuff yet." But that "always faithful, always there for you" restaurant chain that Anthony Bourdain admired so much was ready to serve the community.

Many of the supplies needed wouldn’t be able to get there without the help of private sector partners like FedEx which is working with several non-profits to help provide transportation support. For small towns, places like coffee shops and local restaurants are often the local hubs of activity. Just a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, or the chance to catch up with a neighbor can mean a lot to someone who may have lost everything.

It says its strategy is more about marketing and building goodwill than profits. Waffle House, a privately held company based in suburban Atlanta, may be best known as a roadside stop for retirees driving south or the place where musician Kid Rock got into a brawl after a 2007 concert. WELDON, N.C.—When a hurricane makes landfall, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency relies on a couple of metrics to assess its destructive power. Yes, the government really does use the Waffle House Index, though not necessarily in an official capacity.

He also investigated county animal shelters' euthanization rates and the struggles Florida felons face when re-entering society, stories that won a regional Hearst and Murrow award, respectively. In 2017, Ramsey was a USA Today College correspondent, where he reported on higher education news. "They were making coffee by pouring bottled water into the coffee maker, and they were serving breakfast with plastic plates and utensils because they couldn't wash anything," Fugate recalled.

Yesterday, EHS Today, a magazine for environment, health and safety leaders, explained that major companies such as The Home Depot, Walmart, and Waffle House serve as role models in disaster preparedness. These companies have good risk management plans to ensure that their stores continue to operate when a disaster strikes, and also provide basic supplies to people in their community. An important element is limiting the menu so the company’s supply chain can focus on keeping certain items stocked and chilled or frozen.

Waffle House is not the only business whose operations are measured to determine natural disaster impact, and FEMA does not formally use Waffle House closures to assess the scope of disasters. FEMA assesses the impact of natural disasters by measuring their interruption of multiple large national chains and informally references a "Waffle House Index." Waffle House responded to several other disasters this year before Irene hit. After a series of deadly tornadoes tore through Alabama and Georgia in late April, one restaurant was destroyed and another 20 were without power.

If your comic book cover features multiple characters in motion or a lot of activity, try to create a visual flow. Remember that the eye typically moves left to right, then from the middle down to the bottom of the page.

Drop Issue #1 like it’s hot

You may want to collaborate with the same artist who created your interior design to make your cover, to ensure readers have a good idea of what they can expect from the art style. Make sure that whichever title you choose, it connects with the cover art and offers readers a feel for what the story will be like on the inside. So if it's a romantic comic with the title "Love Lounge", then it should probably reflect a love scene or seductive mood on the cover. Want to create a comic book covers to attract readers and entice people to buy your comic? Except with superheroes and people trying to save the world.

Elements of a Comic Book: How to Structure Your Comic Book Layout

Smaller panels quicken the pace, ideal for rapid action or dialogue. The gutters play a subtle yet powerful role in timing; wider gutters can indicate a pause or a break in time, while narrower ones suggest a faster, more seamless progression of events. All these elements play a strategic role in a comic book layout and can help you create a vivid, expressive comic that pulls the reader into your story.

The 8-step guide to creating and publishing your own comic book

Comic covers often show characters performing all kinds of motions, like flying, swinging, running, jumping, falling, etc. There are several ways you can showcase your characters on the comic cover, but let's learn how to do so in a more charismatic way. The most common titles either use the main character name, are 'action' based, or have a mysterious tone.

Create a Comic: How to Plan and Lay Out Your Comic

Start adding points with the Pen Tool where you want to modify the clipping mask. This panel uses a square clipping mask, but I changed my mind and want it to be an isolated panel. I want to have the character overlap the above fantasy panel a bit. I think this will make it even clearer that she is daydreaming. Just like last time, feel free to ink without thinking about staying within the border.

I”ve put up a male and a female version, making it quick and easy for your to concentrate on the design rather than anatomy. Please note that people are not ALL the same size, so you may have to vary a bit in your rendering of the characters in your book. For Creative Bloq, she has written about an array of subjects, including animation, web design and character design. I find the most efficient way to 'work out a layout' is by using thumbnails.

Create your perfect cover image

For this example I will be using my little chef character from a previous tutorial, to tell a short, slapstick kind of comic. I want to portray her as a cheery but clumsy character, so she will have several mishaps in the kitchen but will do her best to get everything together.

Using the Rectangle Tool I place the page and panels out as placeholders. The blue is to separate the panels more easily when I start inking. There is an expression called "talking heads" for comics where characters are talking a lot and the panels are just basically that, talking heads. For strip comics it is not unusual for the panels to look very similar, with just one or two characters talking. Having a written script, however simple, will be a handy reference for this next step. Now that we have written down all the actions we need, it is time to turn words into pictures.

comic book design

While you may feel like grabbing a blank sheet of paper – or launching your favorite drawing app – and just diving in, by doing so, you're likely setting yourself up for failure. Drag-selecting ensures that you are selecting both the transparent clipping mask and the black frame border at the same time. Now you can drag the anchor points to change the appearance of the frame. The hidden parts of the inked panel will show accordingly. All over the world there are different styles of comics, not only in the drawings but in the layouts as well. The empty spaces between the comic panels are commonly referred to as 'gutters', which are often used in Western comics.

The inking process of going over pencil sketches with ink enhances the clarity and impact of your visuals. It defines the artwork, emphasizing shadows, contours, and textures. Skilled inkers use varying line weights to create depth and perspective, making the images pop off the page. Solid blacks and cross-hatching techniques can add volume and a sense of lighting, contributing to the overall tone. The use of leading lines – whether a cityscape’s straight lines or a winding road – can direct the reader’s attention to specific parts of the panel. The balance between detailed and open spaces within a panel can also influence the pacing and mood of the story.

After looking at a range of comic book covers, it’s time to test out some comic book ideas. Think about the cover like a teaser for your audience, and make a list of possible cover scenes that connect to the storyline. Do you want to show the main character alone, with a villain, or in a group?

But it wasn't until recently that I decided to write my own comic book. Using various kinds of panels, we can give different feelings to our comic, and working in Illustrator gives us the opportunity to use clipping masks which we can modify to our liking. This way you can keep shaping the mask however you like. Since we are just working with lines and not white color, this panel and the one above interfere. To make our character overlap the panel above, we need to change that panel's clipping mask a bit as well. Top the panel off by pasting the copied frame border on top of everything with Command-F.

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), additional safety and sanitation measures are in effect at this property. Guests under 21 years old can only check in with a parent or official guardian. This hotel was highly-rated for its very comfy beds.

Staff assisted with printing out boarding pass. This aging gem was opened in 1851 by enterprising innkeeper Mary Marshall, making it the city’s oldest hotel. In the Civil War it served as a hospital, while Joel Chandler Harris, author of the famous “Uncle Remus” stories (of Br’er Rabbit and company), lived here in the late 1860s. If you can afford it, the Broughton Balcony Rooms are the best in the hotel and a real treat, opening out onto the spacious, wrought-iron veranda. Surrounded by restaurants and shopping, short walk to City Market and Riverwalk. I like the idea of staying in a historical bldg, and I would’ve loved to hear the history of it.

Room Service

Amazing hotel, excellent location in Savannah. This place was walking distance to almost every place we wanted to go, including the riverwalk and many ... And Wayne who leads trivia Night as well as other functions is great and always available for recommendations for restaurants and things to see around Savannah. It was great staying here learning the history of this hotel.

See what guests loved the most:

Some guests have reported seeing friendly ghosts at the Marshall House. Our star system does not denote hotel amenities but it does denote the level of our approval. A place with one star is worth a look—after all, it made the list. A rating of two stars means it's excellent, and three stars is the highest praise we give.

We liked the spacious one bedroom suite with view to an internal court where breakfast was served. Classical ambience with luxury details. Historic hotel with good and comfortble reception. Bottles of water, coffee and tea were complimentary, as well as a drink every evening. Central location and historical significance. Loved the wine and cheese evenings with quiz or live music.

Wonderful location, easy walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants. Nice little room, wonderful staff, excellent breakfast. Nice happy hour with wine and cheese along with a harpist. Did not use valet parking....public parking garage 1/2 block away.

These rooms are located along the inside corridor of The Marshall House with convenient elevator access. This round, the course conditions were excellent and we had a great day. The course is part of a multi-course complex in The Landings. The development has over 4000 homes so there are plenty of golfers out and about. A $40 per room/per-day Amenity Fee will be added to the daily room rate. This fee allows guests to enjoy the amenities and services below without miscellaneous charges. The Marshall House is located in the very center of the Historic District.

This hotel was highly rated for its very comfy beds. It's a lovely hotel and the service was great. If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

It's old and charming and that's really all I need. The rooms are great, clean and homey. It's got a good location near all ... Location is fantastic, which is the only reason I would recommend this hotel. The guest rooms are extremely small for 2 people to not be on top of eachother and in each other’s way.

marshall house savannah

The Marshall House is the oldest operating hotel in Savannah and has an authentic atmosphere that's not to be missed. Built in 1851, the hotel was occupied by Union troops led by General Sherman at the end of the Civil War, and was a hospital during two Yellow Fever epidemics. Savannah's charming Historic District is filled with numerous parks and well-kept, architecturally-stunning historic buildings. Guests are required to show a photo identification and credit card upon check-in. Please note that all Special Requests are subject to availability and additional charges may apply. Couples particularly like the location — they rated it 9.7 for a two-person trip.

Guest can expect their hotel to be one of the stops on some of the ghost tours that travel around Savannah's multiple ghostly stops. If you're looking for a hotel that is haunted, without the extremely haunted feel and look, this is the place. One could easily book this hotel without their family members realizing it's haunted.

There's shopping and dining right outside our door, and beautiful squares and antebellum architecture at every turn. Most guests do not need their car until it's time to leave. Based on reviews, other golfers are saying that the course conditions at The Landings Club - Marshwood Course are excellent.

What are the check-in and check-out times at The Marshall House, Historic Inns of Savannah Collection?

Everything was spotless and in great repair. The location is perfect for exploring the historical district. Loved the location, the friendliness of the staff, the comfort of the parlour area and the wine and nibbles reception with entertainment. The waiter serving at this was so nice and welcoming, a credit to the hotel, he was a gentleman. Bedroom was so comfy and immaculately clean. Fun, quirky, and a little bit different, the guest rooms at The Marshall House have a unique style that you just won't find in a new hotel.

Saw tour groups stopping and talking about it across the street but no info was offered to the actual guests of the hotel, which I thought was odd! Guest services is great and so helpful. Every member of the staff was wonderful. Our room was comfortable and quiet, even though our windows faced Broughton Street.

City Market is a more diverse and casual version of Riverfront, with lots of live music and vendors selling locally made wares. Afternoon wine and entertainment nice touch. The conditions, like all the courses are excellent and they do a very good job with all the various golf and country club amenities.

The hotel was beautiful and very clean. The nightly wine and cheese hours with entertainment were terrific. We liked the fact that there was always complimentary cold bottles of water and a coffee and tea station in the lobby. Built in 1851, this charming 68-room property housed Union soldiers during the Civil War -- and some guests say their spirits still walk the hallways. However, this upper-middle-range property has some of the drawbacks common to old buildings, such as noise issues, small rooms and bathrooms, and few amenities.

I've stayed here several times and it's always pleasant and clean. The breakfast is always phenomenal and no other hotel compares. The Marshall House in Savannah is known for its gorgeous architecture, stunning wrought iron, romantic atmosphere and elegant rooms that overlook popular Broughton Street. But there’s way more to The Marshall House than its beauty! Check out these fun facts that make The Marshall House a sought-after destination for history lovers.

An early-19th-century hotel with a past that is steeped in the Civil War.

It's a mix of modern and vintage, past and present, featuring everything from original 1850s doors and moulding to contemporary furniture and present-day amenities. The Marshall House offers three suites and 65 guest rooms, ranging from our Petite Queen Rooms to the unique and spacious Mary Marshall Suite on the balcony. The Marshall House in Savannah is one of the most fascinating hotels in the city. This stunning Historic District hotel has everything you need for a relaxing and comfortable stay. Next time you need a place to stay, be sure to book a room at the Marshall House.

In the oldest city in Georgia, you are bound to hear a surplus of ghost stories. In Savannah, it seems every location has a unique set of ghost stories. The Marshall House is home to quite a few. These spirits are some of Savannah’s friendliest ghosts. Guests of the hotel have said to have heard ghostly children playing and running down the halls late at night as well as faucets turning on by themselves.

Don’t miss the 45 Bistro, which offers a seasonal menu and an extensive wine list. We loved the daily free musical entertainment and happy hour. There was lots of choice and no limits on quantity. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Plesant stay at a nice central hotel. No free parking but some options around. Everything you need in the Room only downside is you hear as people Talk in the walkway ... With a prime location on Broughton Street, you'll be near everything you want to see and do.

If you want to give an assortment of products, check out one of my favorite travel shopping sites minimus.biz, where you can find single-serve packages of toiletries, snacks, baby care items, over-the-counter medications, and more. If you need additional help planning a cruise vacation, don’t hesitate to call upon the expert planning team at Touring Plans Travel. There are plenty of free soft drinks available on the ships’ pool decks, but that’s not much help if you’re watching a three-hour movie six decks below. My favorite is the colossal Stanley mug, but there are numerous other brands and sizes. Waterproof phone cases are inexpensive, but they can be tricky to seal properly.

Not everyone feels ill-effects from ocean travel, but even mild seasickness can quickly derail an otherwise lovely vacation. Head trouble off at the pass with motion-sickness remediation such as SeaBands, motion sickness glasses, or good old-fashioned Dramamine. Speak to a medical professional if you have serious concerns about this issue. DCL gives lanyards as a gift to Silver level and higher Castaway Club members. They’re by no means necessary, but some first-time cruisers like to have them on hand. Ship staterooms are small and any noise will inevitably be heard by everyone in the room.

Unlike a frenetic Disney theme park vacation, a cruise vacation can be much more focused on relaxation – kicking back with a good book by the pool or on the beach. Since the pandemic, DCL has not carried reading material in its gift shops. With an e-reader like the Kindle, you can bring a complete series of beach-reads with you on vacation with no worries that you’ll run out of books. Make sure to download all your Bridgertons before you embark the ship because onboard WiFi can be expensive. Stateroom doors on Disney Cruise Line are made of metal, which makes them a great surface for displaying magnets.

A word to the wise — practice closing the case and submerging it in a sink several times filling it with something innocuous like a piece of paper rather than with your expensive gadget. You can increase your storage space by placing some magnetic hooks strategically around your room to hold your day bag, jacket, beach cover-up, or other doo-dads. A Disney Gift Card can be used at the ship’s onboard shops or applied to a stateroom balance. I recommend packing cubes for most travel, but I find them a near imperative for travel on the Disney Wish. The primary stateroom storage on the Wish takes the form of shelves rather than drawers. It’s much easier to keep track of items when they’re contained in a packing cube rather than loose on a shelf.

If you need sound to fall asleep, such as a podcast, or even white noise, do everyone a favor and invest headphones that are comfortable enough to wear as you drift into sleepyland. If you can’t sleep with something on your head, a SleepBar can be another helpful option. You should be able to take photos of your underwater snorkeling finds with your phone inside a waterproof case, but I’ve never been able to get good shots through a case’s thick plastic. You’ll have better luck with something like a disposable underwater camera for kids or with a waterproof Go-Pro for adults. Keep everyone’s feet safe while you explore the beach by investing in quality water shoes. Keep all your paperwork in one safe spot with a family passport holder.

DCL provides towels on the ship and on its private islands, so you don’t have to bring those with you. A few sets of towel clips or towel bands can help keep your towels in place while you’re off getting another serving of chicken nuggets. Passionate cruisers have been known to invest significant time or significant money on sites like Etsy to create elaborate personalized magnets. For this reason, my magnets of choice are versions of Magnetic Poetry. It’s a hoot to come back to your room and find cute messages left by other guests. Great choices for cruises in the islands is the Pirate Magnetic Poetry kit or the Beach Magnetic Poetry kit. There is  also a Christmas version and an Edgar Allen Poe version that might be fun if you’re sailing on a Halloween cruise. The best Caribbean cruise for every type of traveler

best month to go on a cruise

Summer cruises are a great way to reconnect with loved ones and enjoy much-needed relaxation. Known for crowds and congestion almost everywhere, summer cruises in July (and August) are busy in the Bahamas. The Bahamas continue to be a dry, warm paradise in February, with low chances of rain. Expect temperatures to stick close to highs and lows in January, with lows not dipping below the mid-60s and highs reaching the 80s. This is also the optimum time to sail the Caribbean, with long dry days and calm trade winds.

Eastern Caribbean

The spring and fall are the optimal times to visit, with fewer tourists, cooler temperatures and lower prices. You'll also find that most everything is open during that time and easier to see without battling the crowds. The best time to cruise to the Caribbean without all the tourists is typically in late fall and between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. You can also avoid the crowds in late April and early May after the spring break rush but before school lets out and summer vacations begin.

Best time to cruise the Panama Canal for low prices

These festivals can also affect the opening of attractions, restaurants, banks and other venues you might want to visit ashore. You'll find moderate temperatures (in the mid-70s to low 80s) and drier weather in January and February. During those months, it's more pleasant to engage in outdoor adventures like hiking and kayaking, which are a highlight when visiting places like Panama and Costa Rica. If your heart is set on traveling to Hawaii in the summer, or you want to escape the winter's snow at home in February, look for deals with an early booking.

Month-by-month guide for traveling on Cruises

Weather is a pretty big consideration when it comes to booking an Alaskan cruise. If you have a low tolerance for cold weather, cruising Alaska during the warmest months of July and August is a better choice. While it is possible to see humpbacks during the entire cruise season (April-October), your best bet for whale watching will be the months of June, July, and August. They are quite an awe-inspiring sight to see as they travel in pods, breech, and feed.

The best Caribbean cruise for every type of traveler

Just be aware that if you head to Alaska early in the spring, some of the stores may not have opened yet. Arrive in the fall, and you may find that tour operators and shops have begun to cut back hours or have closed. July is the height of peak season, with the warmest weather of the year and long daylight hours. It's also the best month for wildlife viewing, especially for humpback whales, brown and black bears and migrating shorebirds and puffins.

The weather in September in the Bahamas is humid, which isn’t ideal for cruisers who want relaxing beach days with little to no humidity. The temperatures are mild, with the lows not going below 70 degrees F and the highs going up to 87 degrees F on hot days. Along with the heat of summer comes the start of the rainy season in the Bahamas.
